Peace
Building |
| ACSF, as of February 2006, has established its peace building department. This initiative has been undertaken due to the dire need for conflict transformation and peace building programs in Afghanistan. A great deal of effort has been expended by various players in attempts to rebuild the physical infrastructure of Afghanistan while comparatively little support has been provided to rebuild the social infrastructure. To rehabilitate the minds and souls might take several generations and it is a process where success becomes not visible in the same way as building a bridge or school and thus, it is difficult to measure. However, it is strongly believed that there is no sustainable development without peace. The development of a just and equitable society based on the rule of law, respect for human rights and fundamental freedom is also part of the ACSF mission. To become involved in the process of conflict transformation and peace building in Afghanistan, from the position of one of the major actors in the field of civil society is a natural step towards a broader portfolio of issues relevant to civil society. ACSF, having experience from other civic education outreach campaigns, has the capacity to utilize a functioning network and in a way has the responsibility to become involved in the efforts to establish peace in Afghanistan. 2 internal workshops have taken place so far in which peace building and its relevance for ACSF were discussed. A strategy was developed.
To start with, ACSF will build the capacity of its own staff in terms of conflict transformation, peace building, conflict-sensitivity and related topics. In a second stage workshops for the members of ACSF will be offered. Moreover the peace building department will advocate for peace building and support the existing network structures (i.e. ACSONP). The experience from the field made by ACSF and by its members will feed the mainstreaming process of peace building within ACSF, within the other organizations working in the same field and the advocacy activities targeted towards the government and the civil society. In the long run ACSF will become involved in implementing peace building projects after a careful assessment of the needs.
